Two very different ways to experience one of Mexico’s most beautiful new destinations.
Mandarina is one of those places where choosing the hotel is almost as important as choosing the destination.
Tucked between the jungle and Pacific coast north of Puerto Vallarta, the Mandarina development is home to two exceptional hotels: One&Only Mandarina and Rosewood Mandarina.
I’ve stayed at both, and while I loved them for different reasons, I don’t think they’re interchangeable.
If I were planning a honeymoon or romantic escape, I’d choose One&Only.
For a family trip, or for someone who wants to be able to walk or bike around the property more easily, I’d lean toward Rosewood.
Here’s how I’d decide.
One&Only Mandarina
I first stayed at One&Only Mandarina on a minimoon right after my wedding, so I may have been predisposed to love it.
But the hotel made it very easy.
The treehouses are some of the most beautiful and private accommodations I’ve experienced in Mexico. Tucked into the jungle, they feel completely removed from the rest of the resort.
And then there is the service.
The butlers and entire team went out of their way to make us feel special throughout our stay, constantly surprising us with little touches that made the trip feel personal rather than simply luxurious.
In fact, I think One&Only Mandarina had some of the friendliest service I’ve experienced at a hotel in North America.
That warmth is what I remember most.
Privacy is part of the appeal
There is a reason Mandarina attracts a lot of high-profile guests: privacy.
During my stay, we happened to sit near a well-known actor at several meals, and there was also an F1 driver staying with his team and family.
What struck me wasn’t the celebrity factor. It was how normal everyone seemed.
No one was making a production out of anyone else.
That is really the appeal of One&Only Mandarina. You can disappear into your own treehouse, spend the day at the beach or spa, and feel completely removed from the outside world.
The food is excellent
One&Only Mandarina also gets the food right.
We did a cooking lesson at Carao, which ended up being one of the highlights of our stay. It was fun, hands-on and felt like a much more memorable way to experience the destination than simply sitting down for another meal.
The dining overall is very strong, and you can also dine at Rosewood Mandarina during your stay, which gives you even more options.
The beach
The beach at One&Only is beautiful, and it feels wonderfully secluded.
One thing to know: there are steps down to the beach, so it isn’t the easiest setup for someone who needs completely flat access.
There is also a shared Mandarina beach club that both hotels can use, which gives you another option for spending the day by the water.
The spa is a highlight
I loved the spa at One&Only.
It is beautiful, peaceful and genuinely feels like part of the experience rather than somewhere you squeeze in for an hour between activities.
If you’re planning a couples trip and want to build in actual downtime, I’d make time for it.
And yes, there are coatis
Mandarina is home to coatis, which are very cute until they decide your room or lunch looks interesting.
You shouldn’t leave your doors open, and they can occasionally make an appearance when you’re eating at the beach.
I’ve heard they’re less of a nuisance now that the resort has implemented more humane ways of managing them, but it’s still something I’d mention to clients before they arrive.
It is a very small trade-off for being surrounded by this much nature.
Rosewood Mandarina
I visited Rosewood Mandarina shortly after it opened with a group of advisors and stayed in one of the beachfront one-bedroom suites.
I loved it, but the experience is quite different from One&Only.
Where One&Only feels tucked into the jungle, Rosewood feels a little more open and connected to the surrounding resort.
And that distinction matters.
The biggest difference: how you move around
One of my favorite things about Rosewood is that you can actually walk or bike around parts of the property.
If you’re staying in the beach or flatlands areas, you can easily walk or bike to restaurants, the beach and other parts of the resort. There are buggies available when you’d rather not walk, but you don’t feel as dependent on them.
At One&Only, you’ll be taking a buggy almost everywhere.
Neither approach is better. They simply create different experiences.
At Rosewood, I liked having the freedom to grab a bike and head off for breakfast or walk down toward the beach.
Choosing your room at Rosewood
The location of your room matters here.
The beachfront and flatlands areas are more open and have a little less privacy, but they’re also the easiest places to get around.
If privacy is your priority, I’d look more closely at the mountain accommodations.
The flatlands rooms are particularly nice, and the rooftop category has an enormous patio that could be a fantastic setup for a group traveling together.
That flexibility is one of the reasons I particularly like Rosewood for families and groups.
The food is just as good
I thought the food at Rosewood was equally as strong as One&Only.
And one of the best parts of staying at either property is that you’re not completely limited to your own hotel.
Guests can dine across both properties, which means you can choose the restaurant based on what you feel like doing that evening rather than feeling like you’ve exhausted your options after a few days.
That makes a longer stay much more appealing.
The best part: you can experience both
One of the things I love about Mandarina is that the two hotels don’t feel completely separate.
There are experiences shared across the development, including polo, zip lining and horseback riding on the beach, so you can choose your hotel based on the kind of stay you want without giving up the activities that make Mandarina special.
The shared beach club is another advantage. Guests at both hotels can spend time there, which gives you another place to swim, relax and spend the day.
That makes splitting a stay particularly appealing for couples. You can enjoy the more relaxed, residential feel of Rosewood, try some of Mandarina’s more adventurous activities, and then finish your trip tucked away in a One&Only treehouse.
So, which one should you choose?
This is where I think the decision is actually quite easy.
Choose One&Only Mandarina if…
You’re planning a honeymoon or romantic escape.
You want maximum privacy, beautiful jungle treehouses, exceptional service and the feeling that you’ve disappeared into the rainforest.
I’d also choose it if service is one of your highest priorities.
Choose Rosewood Mandarina if…
You’re traveling with family or want more freedom to explore the resort on foot.
The beach and flatlands accommodations make it particularly easy to get around, and the larger spaces work well for families and groups.
I’d also look at Rosewood if you like the idea of having a slightly more residential, less secluded feeling.
If you’re traveling with kids…
Both properties are excellent for families, but this is one area where I’d give Rosewood the edge.
One&Only has a wonderful kids’ club, but children cannot stay in the treehouses because of safety considerations. That matters because the treehouses are such a defining part of the One&Only experience. Families can still have a fantastic stay, but I’d look carefully at the available family-friendly accommodations when choosing the property.
Rosewood’s kids’ club, on the other hand, is exceptional.
I met the head of the kids’ club during my visit, and she was genuinely warm and enthusiastic about what they had created. On one of my buggy rides around the property, I shared a ride with a family who told me it was the best kids’ club they had experienced at a resort.
That’s the kind of feedback I pay attention to.
Rosewood also has an advantage for families simply because of the way the property is laid out. You can walk or bike between parts of the resort, or hop in a buggy when you need one, which makes the day feel a little easier with young children.
For a family trip, I’d lean toward Rosewood.
For couples, you don’t necessarily have to choose
If you’re staying for five or more nights, I actually love the idea of splitting a couples trip between both properties.
Start at Rosewood for a few nights, where you can explore more easily, bike around the property and try different restaurants, then move to One&Only for the more private, romantic finish.
Because the hotels are part of the same Mandarina development, you can enjoy the restaurants, beach club and shared activities across both properties, making it easy to experience the best of each.
For a honeymoon or anniversary, I’d especially consider ending at One&Only. There is something about finishing your trip in a private treehouse, surrounded by jungle, that feels like the perfect finale.
If it were my trip…
For a couples trip, I’d go back to One&Only Mandarina.
The combination of the treehouse, privacy, service and jungle setting is hard to beat.
But if I were planning a family trip or traveling with a group, Rosewood Mandarina would be very high on my list.
And the good news is that you don’t really have to choose where to eat.
You can stay at one and experience both.
The Domino Take
I don’t think there is a “better” hotel at Mandarina.
There is a better hotel for the trip you’re planning.
One&Only is where I’d go when I want to disappear.
Rosewood is where I’d go when I want a little more freedom to move around, bring the family or settle into a longer stay.
Both deliver the combination that makes Mandarina so compelling in the first place: jungle, ocean, beautiful design and a feeling of being somewhere that still feels wonderfully removed from the usual Mexican resort scene.
And for me, that’s the real luxury.
Not simply having a beautiful room, but having the right kind of beautiful room for the way you want to spend your time.
The Last Word
I still think about One&Only Mandarina as one of those trips where the hotel itself became part of the memory.
The treehouse.
The surprises from the team.
The cooking lesson.
The beach.
The spa.
And the feeling that, for a few days, there was nowhere else I needed to be.
Rosewood gave me a different feeling: more freedom, more movement and a little more of a sense of place beyond the room itself.
That’s why I love having both.
If you’re deciding between them, don’t ask which hotel is better.
Ask how you want to feel when you’re there.
If the answer is hidden away in the jungle, choose One&Only.
If it’s being able to grab a bike, head to the beach and let the day unfold, choose Rosewood.
And if you still can’t decide, stay at both.
